About Me
I graduated from college in 2013 with a degree in Music Education. I have been teaching music in some capacity ever since. I have been a private teacher since 2018 and I have also taught marching percussion as a drumline instructor and pit percussion instructor for a number of years. Other teaching experiences I have include many years leading worship teams at churches, various small ensembles in college, my time as a student teacher with a middle school band, and teaching for SWAN (swan4kids.org).
Before college, I got my start playing piano as a 1st grader and over the years I developed a love for music. I picked up cello in fourth grade, drums in 8th grade, and in college bass and guitar. So basically I have been practicing, studying, and learning music on a variety of instruments nearly my entire life.
My Lessons
My general philosophy is that whichever instrument I am teaching, that instrument is a tool to teach music. So while all lessons will have a focus on good technique and posture, I also ensure all my students gain a general understanding of music theory, counting rhythms, improvisation, reading music, playing by ear, etc. In this way, I strive to help each of my students become the most well rounded musician possible.
In addition to teaching, I also have many years of experience mentoring youth. This has changed my perspective over the years as the relationship between instructor and student by nature has a mentor and mentee dynamic as well. I make sure to listen and respond to the individual interests, struggles, and abilities of all my students to provide the best possible outcome in all their musical endeavors.
